Buloke Shire Council is pleased to announce that works on the Nullawil Meridian Road Rehabilitation Project will commence in the coming weeks, delivering critical reconstruction a key local transport route, which as significantly impacted by repeated flood damage and deterioration over the past four years.
The project involves the reconstruction of approximately 7.1 kilometres of Nullawil Meridian Road between the Berriwillock-Birchip Road and Nullawil-Birchip Road intersections.
The road will be reconstructed to a 6.2 metre seal, providing safety and accessibility for road users.
The project will also include the construction of 1.5 metre wide crushed rock shoulders on both sides of the road and reformed swale drains.
Not only will the project see the existing road reconstructed and widened, but materials from the current pavement will also be recycled and reused where possible as part of the road reconstruction.
Combined with reconstructed pavement, sealed road surface and drainage, the works will return this important transport link for the community and industry.
Council has awarded the construction contract to Hiway Stabilizing, who will engage local contractors where possible to assist with earthworks and rock placement throughout the project.
Mayor, Cr Graeme Milne, said the project represented a significant milestone in the reinstatement of our road network, which has been battered by a number of flood events over the last four years.
“This project will return one of our many roads significantly impacted by repeated flooding over the past four years, with the road reconstructed and widened, delivering a safer, stronger and more reliable route for residents, agricultural operators and freight vehicles,” Cr Milne said.
“We also acknowledge the strong community advocacy and media attention, including the coverage that helped shine a spotlight on Nullawil Meridian Road and just how important this road is to residents.
“Those voices played a key role in securing the investment we are seeing today and it’s something we can genuinely be proud of as a community.”
Construction is expected to take approximately six months to complete, subject to weather conditions.
To allow the project to be delivered as efficiently and safely as possible, the road will be closed to through traffic during construction.
Appropriate signage and detour arrangements will be in place, and Council thanks the community for its patience and understanding during the works.
The Nullawil Meridian Road Rehabilitation Project is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
