Recycling Update

Recycling

Recycling firm SKM last night announced it would immediately stop accepting recyclable materials.

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) president Cr Coral Ross said she understood SKM had described the shutdown as a "temporary cease".

Earlier this week SKM was given a 10-day lifeline in the Supreme Court so it can close a deal with a prospective buyer and repay tens of millions of dollars in debts to its creditors.

It was ruled against public interest to wind the company up due to the significant risk that would be posed to the environment, with large quantities of recyclables likely to find their way immediately to landfill.

The matter will return to court on 2 August 2019.

Council’s recycling materials are normally taken to facilities operated by SKM by Council’s waste contractor, Four Seasons Waste.

Council continues to work closely with Four Seasons Waste and MAV and urges residents to continue to recycle as normal.

Council will continue to provide further updates on this situation as required.
