Opening Round For Birchip-Watchem Bulls

Publish Date: 24 June 2021

A midseason fixture against Charlton took on even greater significance for the Birchip-Watchem Bulls as key projects were officially opened at the Birchip Recreation Reserve last weekend.

The home of the Bulls is now enhanced by updated female friendly changerooms, resurfaced oval and new netball courts.

The Netball Court Upgrade ($727,955), which delivered two new acrylic courts and lighting, was funded by Federal Government’s Drought Resilience and Response Program, Buloke Shire Council, the State Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund – Female Friendly Facilities 2020-21 and the Birchip-Watchem Netball Club.

The Birchip Leisure Centre Changeroom Redevelopment Project ($234,667) delivered female friendly changerooms for both teams and umpires as well as new accessible family friendly amenities upstairs and was funded by the Victorian Government’s Female Friendly Facilities Fund 2018-19, Buloke Shire Council, Federal Government’s Drought Resilience and Response Program, AFL Victoria’s Female Friendly Facility Program and Birchip Leisure Centre.

Whilst the Main Oval Redevelopment ($221,000) included drainage and resurfacing works was funded by the Victorian Government’s Country Football and Netball Program 2019-20, Federal Government’s Drought Resilience and Response Program, Buloke Shire Council and Birchip Watchem Football Club.

With active sporting participation in Buloke Shire at the highest rates in the state, investment in high quality, accessible and inclusive facilities is in step with community expectation.

“These projects again demonstrate Council’s ability to advocate for communities and work together with them and all levels of government to achieve great outcomes. The Birchip Leisure Centre Changeroom Redevelopment, Oval Redevelopment and Netball Court Upgrade projects have been made possible through collaboration and funding from Council, Federal Government, Victorian Government and the Birchip-Watchem Bulls and we wish the club and all user groups all the best in their future endeavours at the reserve”, said Mayor Cr Daryl Warren.
