It's Cumming Along

Publish Date: 11 December 2020

Upgrades to Birchip’s Cumming Avenue are progressing with the southern section of the centre median reaching completion.

New drainage, kerb and channels, plus a pedestrian crossing between the butchers and the hardware stores make up the completed improvements.

With the installation of drainage across Cumming Avenue, along with the subsequent asphalting, a heavy vehicle detour is now in place until Friday 18 December 2020.

During this time access will be limited to light vehicles and emergency access as required, and detours will be in place for heavy vehicles via Saleyards Road.

Following community feedback, footpath and drainage works on the west side of the street will commence in January, easing the pressure on retailers during the busy Christmas trading period.

Millers Civil Contractors and representatives from the Buloke Shire Council will continue to work in consultation with traders to ensure minimal disruptions.

Works on the east side of Cumming Avenue are projected to commence in March 2021.

The historical time capsule has remained unaffected by the upgrades, and will be acknowledged with a plaque following the landscaping early next year. The stump jump plough has been removed and is currently in storage for future installation.

Public consultation is being sought to determine the future of the distinctive clock and tower, with ideas and comments to be directed to Council’s Civil Engineer, Brad Smith by email to bsmith@buloke.vic.gov.au.

The Buloke Shire Council thanks the public and Birchip community for their understanding and continued support during this period of disruption, with the outcome ensuring a safer and more user-friendly community precinct.
