March Meeting Wrap

Publish Date: 14 March 2019

Buloke Shire Council’s March Ordinary Meeting was highlighted by applications to the Fixing Country Roads Program and the tracking of progress of Council’s Capital Works Program.

The Fixing Country Roads Program is the Victorian Government's commitment to regional Victorians to improve the condition of their local roads. $100 million has been provided for grants to rural and regional Councils to undertake local road projects beyond regular road maintenance. Council has identified two projects through road condition assessments which meet the criteria and will apply for funding of these projects.

Council will apply for $1.5 million for the southern section of the Culgoa - Ultima Road which has been assessed as beyond intervention levels and requires a full pavement rehabilitation. The amount being applied for is the maximum available funding under the program.

An application for $300,000 of funding from the program will also be lodged for works to the Watchem-Warracknabeal Road. Council will commit a combined amount of $900,000 in matching funding to the projects as part of the 2019-20 Annual Budget.

Council has noted positive progress against its 2018-19 Capital Works Program. The significant program, benefiting from large scale success in external funding applications, has many contracts awarded on projects either set to begin or be finalised in the last four months of this financial year.

Two of Council’s key projects are progressing well. The Charlton Park Project is quickly taking shape with steel having been erected and is on track for completion in July. Frame work is set to go up at the Donald Community Precinct Project with the anticipated completion date being August.

The Lake Tyrrell Tourism Project will be carried forward into the next financial year. A Cultural Heritage Management Plan is currently in draft form and a planning permit for the project will be lodged this month.

Significant projects to commence over the next few months include upgrades to Apex Park in Sea Lake, installation of the temporary flood levee in Camp Street Donald as well as significant resealing and pavement replacement across the road network.

Minutes from and documents relating to the Ordinary Meeting are available on Council’s website.

The next Ordinary Meeting of Council will be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019.
