It's Time To Celebrate

Publish Date: 20 September 2021

Buloke Shire Council is again looking to celebrate what is great in the region, our people, as we recognise outstanding contributions to the community with the annual Australia Day Awards.

Council is now calling for nominations for each of its three coveted awards:

  • Citizen of the Year (for persons 25 years or older on 26 January 2022)
  • Young Citizen of the Year (for persons aged 15 to 24 years on 26 January 2022).

The basic criterion for the awards in these two categories is persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.

  • Community Event of the Year Award (presented to the person/group who has staged the most outstanding community event during the year).

Nominations for these awards are now open and can be made by downloading the Australia Day Awards Nomination Form from Council’s website or obtained in person at Council’s Customer Service Centre.

“It is with great pride we open these awards for this year. The honour roll of winners represents our local champions and iconic events that make Buloke what it is. It has been another year heavily impacted by the pandemic and again we have seen tremendous displays of community leadership. We look forward to honouring all nominations and crowning our new community award winners early in the new year,” said Mayor Cr Daryl Warren.

Last year’s Citizen of the Year Margaret Pollington is looking forward to handing over the crown to another deserving local champion.

“To be nominated and then to receive the Buloke Citizen of the Year 2020 Award was not only a huge honour for me but a very humbling experience. There are many people within our Buloke communities who are very deserving of this award,” Margaret said.

Nominations are to be received by close of business Friday 19 November 2021.

Council is also in the early planning stages of the Australia Day Eve Event which is building year on year into one of the regions key celebrations. After a successful event was held in a COVIDSafe environment in Nullawil in January of this year, Council is hopeful that the community will again be able come together to mark the national day. Council is in the early planning stages of the event and hope to hold the celebrations in Berriwillock.

Council will announce the winners of the awards at its Australia Day Eve Event to be held on Tuesday 25 January 2022.
