August Meeting Wrap

Publish Date: 14 August 2020

Policy adoption, compliance requirements and committee establishments were the focus of the Buloke Shire Council’s August Ordinary Meeting.

The adoption of a new Council Expenses Policy was a requirement of the new Local Government Act, and now incorporates three new provisions under the Local Government Act, two of which are supportive of child care and carer needs.

Council also adopted the Public Transparency Policy, along with reviews of the S6 Instrument of Delegation and the Governance Rules 2020.

Meeting conduct and decision making are the key components of the 2020 Governance Rules, which was also adopted at the August Meeting. Following a community engagement process of the draft Governance Rules, the document was adopted with only administrative changes, having received no submissions.

Council transitioned three former Section 86 Committees to Community Asset Committees, as was required in the new Local Government Act.  Council will continue to support the Birchip Housing Community Asset Committee which manages the George Gould Flats and Dorothy Jolly Units, as well as the Wycheproof Recreation Reserve and Charlton Park committees.

Successful applications from Charlton Croquet Club and Charlton Golf Club to the Council’s Community Grants and Sponsorship Program will provide assistance with facility upgrades to the tune of $731 and $2,000 respectively. New block-out curtains for the Croquet Club and the construction of a shed to house golf carts will improve members’ participation in these activities and help to maintain their social connectedness through these sporting outlets.

The contract for works to develop the Charlton and Donald Riverfronts was awarded to BLR Provincial Pty Ltd. These plans, which include new viewing decks, fencing, seating, shelter, lighting and landscaping across the two sites, were developed in partnership with local community reference groups. These works have been funded through the Federal Government Regional Growth Fund.

The minutes and documents related to this meeting will be made available on Council’s website.

The next Ordinary Meeting of Council is scheduled to be held from 7.00pm on Wednesday 9 September 2020.
