Fancy a summer by the pool?

For the Buloke Shire Council’s Lifeguards, “poolside” is a vocation rather than just a summertime job.

Return seasons are the norm for some young attendants, with the outdoor environment and a passion for meeting people high on the list of attractions.

For Lachlan and Hayley Start of Charlton a swimming background is only part of the story driving their Lifeguard involvement.

Settled in to his third season, Lachlan has used his own experience as a competitive swimmer to assist young people build their aquatic confidence, having worked with students at both St. Joseph’s Primary School and the Charlton College.

“I love meeting people and interacting with the patrons” Lachlan said, “and it benefits the community by having these facilities. The pools are great places to have fun and for people to come to and socialise.”

Personal development is also drawcard. “In this role, you have to think on your feet and be ready to respond to many different situations”, Lachlan said.

With her first pool season underway, Hayley acknowledged other reasons for being attracted to the position.

“Knowing the importance of water safety is essential,” she said, “plus, I love being outside and being active. It’s also a great way of keeping busy during the summer time!”

Giving something back to the community and getting to meet people from different places were also a plus, especially when the feedback was good. “It makes you want to do the job even better,” she said.

Lifeguards receive comprehensive face-to-face training through Life Saving Victoria, as well as completing a range of online modules.

Vigilance around COVID-safe practises at all seven Buloke swimming pools is paramount this season with the Life Guards playing an important role in maintaining the standards.
