Lifeguard Shortage, Summer Is Just Around The Corner – We Need You!

Lifeguard Shortage, Summer Is Just Around The Corner – We Need You!

Publish Date: 2 September 2022

Public outdoor pools in country towns like ours play a significant role in providing a safe place for everyone to cool off during the summer months, however like so many other regional communities across the state Buloke is facing a shortage of Lifeguards.

Buloke Shire Council is proud to continue to offer seven pools across the community at Berriwillock, Birchip, Charlton, Donald, Sea Lake, Watchem and Wycheproof, as a free service, and is committed to ensure each remains open throughout the season.

Our aim is to deliver a safe, fun summer for all residents, but we need help and are calling for expressions of interest from enthusiastic and motivated individuals interested in becoming a Lifeguard for the upcoming summer outdoor pool season.

Council is offering the opportunity to successful applicants to undertake the Lifeguard Course and First Aid pre-requisite, free-of-charge, as part of its commitment and strategy to entice a broader section of the community to become part of the aquatic services team.

“We are really encouraging individuals from all areas the community to come forward, with fully funded training and support available it’s a great chance to get involved,” said Mayor Daryl Warren.

“Our pools play such an important role and in removing some of the traditional barriers to becoming a Lifeguard, like the cost of training, we hope it will encourage more people to apply, whether you are a school leaver, uni student, sports person, mum, dad, carer, uncle, aunt, etcetera - we would love to hear from you!”

Without sufficient Lifeguards, the pools in our community cannot open safely.

Council is calling on the community to reach out to each other and encourage interested persons to step forward, develop some great life skills, ensuring we all have a great summer.
