On the Roads Again

Date Published: 24 April 2020

It is very much business as usual for some parts of Council business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Council staff and contractors have been working tirelessly to progress the $9 million of road infrastructure works that are underway, or about to commence.

Council’s 2019/20 resealing program has commenced. This year’s program, worth $1.6 million, commenced on 20 April 2020 with Council appointed contractors Inroads undertaking the works which kicked off with upgrades to the Banyenong-Jeffcott Road.

Upgrades to the Culgoa – Ultima Road are well underway with three sections recently completed and another due to be finalised in coming weeks. This $2.25 million project was partially funded by the State Government’s Fixing Country Roads Program.

Also funded by that same program was a $400,000 upgrade to a section of the Watchem – Warracknabeal Road which was completed in February.

Flood Road Restoration Program works ($3.5 million funded by Federal Government) are beginning in the first week of May and the highly anticipated Birchip Streetscape - Safer Cumming Avenue Project ($965,000) also commences later that month.

Safety upgrades to widen both Charlton – Swan Hill Road and Praters Road will also run through the month of May. These upgrades were funded by the Department of Transport’s Black Spot Program.

Other works to be undertaken include major seal patching works on Broadway, Wycheproof and View Street, Charlton as well as dip repairs on the Birchip-Corack Road and Watchem-Corack Road.

“It is heartening to see so much work still being undertaken across Buloke. These are difficult times, but ensuring a safe road network is essential Council business. Staff and contractors are taking all necessary extra precautions in their daily routine. Council continues to work with communities and other levels of government to fund and deliver these projects. The Birchip streetscape is an excellent example of that ability to work together to achieve truly aspirational projects”, said Mayor Cr Carolyn Stewart.

Please take extra care when travelling in road work zones.
