Birchip Planning Project Update

Birchip Planning Project Update

Publish Date: 14 September 2021

The Birchip Park and Civic Precinct Planning Project consultation is ramping up.

After some impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic on engagement options, the Project Advisory Group is now in place and listening posts have been scheduled for next week alongside an online survey which opened earlier this month.

The project will review key community and civic facilities, including the Shire Office, Senior Citizens Building, old Shamrock Hotel, Shire Hall and Birchip Park (excluding swimming pool) to identify whether the current facilities are able to provide what the community wants and needs into the future and the costs associated with bringing those facilities up to standard.

This is an important planning project, no buildings are being removed as part of the project and important cultural and social icons, like the War Memorial, will not be moved or altered as a result of any feedback.

No assumptions have been made in relation to the four Council-owned buildings that are included in the project scope, the Shire Offices, Senior Citizen’s Centre, Public Hall and the Shamrock Hotel. No decisions have been made regarding the future use or options for these buildings.

The Project Advisory Group is chaired by Mayor Cr Daryl Warren and is made up of key community group members, staff and consultants engaged by Council.

Cr Warren is pleased that consultation can now start to accelerate to capture the community’s input into the precinct.

“This is such an exciting time in Birchip with separate inter-generational projects underway with the Safer Cumming Avenue and Playspace projects at different points and this planning project to really capture how the most important people, the residents, see the future of a range of assets”, he said.

“This is not an exercise in demolishing buildings, as some may tell you. This is a genuine opportunity to engage with Council and the Project Advisory Group to discuss what Birchip grows into”.

A listening post is taking place between 9.00am and 11.00am Wednesday 22 September 2021 on Cumming Avenue near BCG.
