Former Buloke Shire Councillor, Oliver Guthrie, who passed away 21 September 2020, was one of the inaugural councillors elected to the newly formed Buloke Shire in March of 1997.
A staunch representative for the Mt. Jeffcott Ward, Oliver served until April 2001, helping guide the recently amalgamated Shire through its early days.
Stuart McLean, who served alongside Oliver described him as a person of integrity who had a statesman-like manner.
“Oliver served Buloke well” said Stuart. “He was a good Councillor, a strong character, whose contributions during the transitional period of establishing of the new Shire were important.”
Oliver’s family home at Rich Avon was where he pursued his life-long passion for Corriedale sheep, establishing a renowned stud, which produced the 2001 Australian Sheep Show Champion Interbreed ram.
In addition to extensive contributions to the sheep industry, Oliver was a strong supporter of his local community – serving with the Donald Lions Club for 28 years, the Rich Avon Fire Brigade for 60 years and was a committed Victorian Farmers Federation member after helping establish the organisation in 1979.
Oliver was laid to rest on 29 September 2020 at the Donald cemetery.
He is survived by his wife Pam, children Tom, Chris and Georgina, seven grandchildren and seven great grandsons.
As a mark of respect for his civic contributions Council will fly its flags at the Wycheproof Office at half-mast on Monday 5 October 2020.
