Birchip Streetscap Anouncement May 2019

Stage 1 of the Birchip Streetscape Improvements Project is now fully funded following an announcement of $320,000 from the State Government.

Ali Cupper MP made the announcement in Birchip on Monday 6 May to a strong contingent of locals in Memorial Park. The funding will be matched by a $160,000 commitment from Council to ensure Stage 1 goes ahead.

The works will improve the safety of road users, improve pedestrian access and create a bike lane. In addition, there will be landscaping to improve the aesthetics of Cumming Avenue.

Mayor Cr Carolyn Stewart was full of praise for the community effort to ensure the beginning of this project.

“I congratulate the community and Birchip Forum members that have championed this push, it is great to see the hard work of this planning and advocacy effort paying off. This has been the number one priority project for Birchip for many years and Council has been strong in its work to secure funding for the project. Receiving this funding today highlights the strength of the community planning process and having the community’s priorities clearly agreed and articulated’, she said.

“I also congratulate our staff who also worked closely with the community and funding agencies to secure this funding. Council will, alongside the Birchip community, continue to advocate for further funding to ensure the Birchip Streetscape Improvements Project is completed “, added Cr Stewart.
