Birchip Oval Upgrade Fully Funded

Birchip Oval Upgrade Fully Funded

A key priority for many sporting groups in Birchip is set to be realised after the announcement of $100,000 in funding from the State Government’s Country Football and Netball Program.

Birchip-Watchem Football Club and Birchip Leisure Centre Committee approached Council in 2018 raising concerns about safety of the surface of their main oval for football and cricket. Council worked with all the stakeholders in applying for funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria.

The project will redevelop the oval at Birchip, that currently caters for AFL football and cricket. Works will include re-levelling the oval, replacement of the irrigation system to improve water efficiency and reseeding with drought hardy grasses.

The project is supported by Buloke Shire Council, Birchip-Watchem Football Club, Birchip Cricket Club and the Birchip Leisure Centre Committee. Council has previously allocated $85,000 from the Federal Drought Communities Programme to this project, so the recent funding announcement by Sport and Recreation Victoria, with additional financial support from the Birchip-Watchem Football Club will see the project fully completed.

Works are expected to commence imminently with the oval ready for the football season in 2020.
