Vale Ron Summerhayes

Former Buloke Shire and Shire of Wycheproof Councillor Ron Summerhayes passed away last week. Ron’s commitment to local government was extensive, serving on the Shire of Wycheproof between 1984 and 1995 and then Buloke Shire Council between 2000 and 2003.

Ron farmed land in the Berriwillock area, as his sons Garry and Ian continue to do.

In addition to his time as Councillor he was a huge presence on committees and active within community groups in Berriwillock including the Berriwillock Tennis Club, Berriwillock Golf Club, Berriwillock Hall Committee, Berriwillock Cemetery Trust and the Uniting Church among others.

Bev Cook, who served alongside Ron as Shire of Wycheproof Councillor described him as a committed Councillor.

“He was a great fighter for Berriwillock, a real community man. He did so much for his town and it was tough to do, juggling farming and being a Councillor”, she said.

Council flew flags at half-mast on Wednesday 22 May 2019, the day Ron was laid to rest, at its Wycheproof offices as a mark of respect to the life Ron Summerhayes and his service to his community.
