Walklate Lane Unveiled

Publish date: 3 September 2026

There was a strong sense of pride and reflection in Charlton as family, friends and community members gathered to officially unveil Walklate Lane last Thursday, a lasting tribute to the late Dr Brian Walklate, whose decades of service as a local doctor touched the lives of generations of Charlton residents.

Joined by his wife Mary, members of the Walklate family, Charlton Forum Secretary Markus Phillips, community representatives and residents came together to celebrate a man remembered not only for his medical expertise, but for his compassion, generosity and commitment to the people of Charlton.

The unveiling marks the culmination of a community-led initiative first proposed by the Charlton Forum in 2021.

The Forum's intention was to recognise Dr Brian Walklate's outstanding contribution to the Charlton community by naming the laneway beside his former medical practice, creating a lasting connection between his legacy and the place where he cared for generations of local families for many years.

The proposal was assessed and approved in accordance with the Victorian Naming Rules, recognising the strong historical and community connection between Dr Walklate and the site.

Attending on behalf of Buloke Shire Council, Cr Alan Getley and Cr Bruce Stafford said the unveiling was an important acknowledgement of a life dedicated to serving others.

“We congratulate the Charlton Forum for their commitment in bringing this project to fruition and helping preserve an important part of Charlton's history," they said.

For the Charlton community, the unveiling represents more than the naming of a laneway. For many rural communities, local doctors are often much more than healthcare providers. They become trusted advisers, friends and a constant source of support.

Walklate Lane now stands as a permanent tribute to Dr Walklate and as a reminder of the vital role healthcare professionals play in strengthening and sustaining rural communities.
