Glass Recycling

Glass recycling is a FREE service that has commenced across Buloke Shire to help improve the way our community recycles.

You can now take your lightly rinsed empty glass bottles and jars to a local drop off. These glass drop off sites, are located at various places across our Shire:

  • Charlton Waste Transfer Station: St Arnaud Rd, Charlton
  • Donald Waste Transfer Station: Depot Rd, Donald
  • Sea Lake Landfill: Robinvale Rd, Sea Lake
  • Wycheproof Waste Transfer Station: 281 Mackies Rd, Wycheproof

In addition to these 5 bin locations we have locations in our towns.

  • Birchip: Shire Hall car park, Rundle Street
  • Berriwillock: Next to the CFA shed.
  • Charlton: Watson Street, by the Shire Depot
  • Culgoa: Culgoa Memorial Hall, Main Street

Empty glass bottles and jars do not go in the household recycle bins.

Keep an eye out for NEW locations!

Remember to check opening times for all these facilities – with more on this below

Why drop off your glass?

Broken glass can make other items like cardboard, paper and plastic more difficult to recycle. By sorting our recycling into separate streams, we can keep valuable re usable resources, out of landfill. This means glass materials can be used again and again.

Your old bottles and jars can be turned into things like new glass products and even valuable road construction materials.

Buloke Glass Out is an important step, towards better waste systems: the Victorian Government will introduce a fourth household bin for glass recycling, over the coming years. With more details to be provided on this, as progress is made.

For now, please keep glass out of the yellow recycling bin, and take it to your local glass recycling drop off location. A small act can make a big difference!

Head here for a quick interactive video, explaining what your recycled glass will be used for.

More information about these Landfill & Transfer locations can be found at: https://www.buloke.vic.gov.au/transfer-station-landfill-operating-times

You can ask your questions in the Feedback section provided below

Q. Is this the same as the Container Deposit Scheme?

No, this is a local Buloke Shire Council based program only. The Victorian State Government will be introducing the Container Deposit Scheme as separate to the Buloke Shire Councils Glass Out recycling initiative. The Container Deposit scheme is managed independently, by State Government. For more information about this, please head to www.vic.gov.au/container-deposit-scheme

Residents and local organisations are welcome to take part in the Container Deposit Scheme when it becomes available.

Q. How do I know which bin to use for glass?

The Glass Out bins have a purple lid, you’ll also see signage when you arrive at the drop off locations, to indicate you’ve found the right bin.

Q. When can I drop off my glass?

Each of the glass drop off sites have specific operating hours. The Buloke Shire Councils’ website has more information specific to each location and hours of operation.

For further information on future drop off locations, being placed in local towns throughout the Shire, please visit Councils website for regular updates.

Q. What happens to the glass after it has been dropped off?

Glass will be transported from the glass drop off locations to a glass crushing facility in Warracknabeal. Glass will be crushed and recycled and used for applications such as adding underlay for road pavement. All in aid of reducing the contamination of comingled recycling.

Head here for a quick interactive video, explaining what your recycled glass will be used for.

Q. Why don’t I have a glass recycling bin at my home for kerbside collection?

The way that Victorian households access glass recycling services will vary. Councils and alpine resorts will determine what is best for their communities, consistent with service standards. Some will use drop off points, and others kerbside bins.

Sustainability Victoria are working closely with Councils and alpine resorts across Victoria, to support the transition to a new glass recycling system. For Buloke Shire Council, this support is to be provided to our community as a free service, at each drop off location.

Q. What do I do with my yellow recycling bin? Are there any changes to this kerbside collection?

There will be no changes in Councils kerbside recycling services. The yellow-lid recycling bin will still be collected as per current service arrangements. Fees for this service will remain unchanged.

For best practice, it is important to remove your glass from the yellow-lid comingled recycling bin, and drop off your glass at one of the many drop off locations throughout the Shire.

Q. What is the cost of dropping off my recycled glass at Glass Out locations?

Council is committed to ensuring access to each drop off location, for disposal of your glass recycling, is free of charge.
