Lighting The Regions
Buloke Shire Council is involved in the $12m Lighting the Regions
streetlight project. Lighting the Regions
is an important regional partnership between 16 Victorian municipalities covering 45% of Regional Victoria and will oversee the replacement of 23,000 street lights. The project area is home to more than 300,000 residents, who will benefit from the changeover of older Mercury Vapour streetlights to new Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.
The project will oversee the replacement of up to 671 street lights in the Buloke Shire to more energy efficient technology which will reduce energy consumption and is estimated to save the Shire more than $1.3M over 20 years in energy and maintenance costs.
Lighting the Regionsis a great example of what is possible when all levels of government come together and work collaboratively to address the challenges of carbon emissions and rising energy prices.
The Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance and Wimmera-Mallee Sustainability Alliance have been instrumental in bringing together the local government partners to collaborate in scoping out what is the largest street lighting partnership in Australia.
Significant funding from the Department of Industry, under the Community Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP2), has complemented funds provided by the local government partners to deliver the project. This has resulted in a once in a lifetime opportunity to achieve change on a scale unlikely to be repeated in the foreseeable future, with the project delivering a reduction of 180,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the next 20 years.
The project commenced its roll out the Hepburn Shire in October 2014 and is estimated to be totally complete by early 2016. The street light changeover program is rolling out on a shire by shire basis and Buloke Shire Council has commenced its installation in February 2015 and estimated to be completed within the month.
Work commenced in Nandaly and Sea Lake on Monday 2nd February, with Berriwillock, Culgoa and Nullawil being changed over as of the 3rd February. Birchip will commence 4th February, Wycheproof on the 5th and Charlton on the 6th. Donald installations will commence week starting the 9th of February.
